Interactive theatrical storytelling using a combination of music, movement and theatre games, to make the story come to life. Explore many sound possibilities to create a setting for a story, or simply sing a song that helps tell the story. We move to our own sounds as well as to recorded music and sounds – sometimes using yoga, sometimes using simple dance moves and sometimes making it all up. Students will us their visual creativity and create costumes from scarves, costume jewelry and a variety of hand props. With these elements they will explore their own sense of creativity.

There is a dialogue between Representation and Abstraction in contemporary art. This course will engage in some of that anything goes dialogue through the exploration of concepts and techniques. Using still life, landscape, the human form, and pop imagery as source material as well as nonobjective painting, the exercises in this course are designed to loosen up paint application and allow imagery to emerge. By exploring a range of mark marking such as gestural brush strokes, dripping or purring paint, the grid, collage, etc., the students will be encouraged to develop their personal iconography. The purpose of this course is to strengthen the connection between the student and what is being seen. Using an approach that strives to “keep it simple,” students will work with a figure model in a series of short poses, with the understanding that it is our task to capture the what is essential first subtlety and details must be subordinate to the big, simple abstract pattern of light and shadow. In this course, students will become proficient at that first stage. Using charcoal, students will use a “wipe-out” technique to study concepts including gesture, proportion, and light effect. Demonstrations and individual critiques will be conducted regularly. Drawing experience not necessary.
